Iraklion

Iraklion (sometimes known as "Heraklion") is the capital city of the island of Crete, and fourth largest city in Greece. As of 2001, Iraklion had a population of 137,711.

Iraklion is close to ancient Minoan palace at Knossos, and is likely to have been the site of a port since at least 2000 BC. The present day city was however founded in 824 AD, by the Saracens, who built a moat around the city, and used it as a base for pirate attacks on Byzantine shipping in the Aegean. The city was then successfully controlled by the Byzantines, Venetians and Ottomans, until finally coming under Greek rule in 1898 (and becoming internationally recognized as part of the Kingdom of Greece in 1913).
